Applet: Randomly sampled Mandelbrot
This is my favourite among the mandelbrot applets: a regular Mandelbrot graph that is coloured automatically in a way designed to show detail and be aesthetically pleasing. Also, the points aren't based on the image raster but are randomly selected, with multiple hits on the same pixel being averaged together. The Metropolis-Hastings algorithm is used for the random point selection, to avoid spending too much time in the blackness inside the set.
Presumably this should generate a much more detailed image if left to do this for a significant time. Try zooming into the less populated areas and see previously invisible filaments slowly appear!
